Tracklisting & More Information

This was to be the last single that The Beatles released during Brian Epstein's lifetime and also the first of the new green Parlophone 'A' label design.
It was recorded in front of a live audience at Abbey Road Studio One on 25th June for one of the first Television programmes to be sent live via Satellite across five continents. The Beatles sang and played along to an already recorded backing tape.
Brian himself thought that it was the best thing that they'd ever done and it was certainly the ideal message to the world during that 'Summer Of Love'.
Written almost to order by John for that BBC Television programme, 'Our World', it was simple, direct and very easy for non-English speaking audiences to understand and even sing along to. Several musical motifs at the end contributed to the global theme, with snatches from the US's In The Mood & the UK's Greensleeves, to counterpoint the opening reference to the French national anthem - A truly global recording.
The B Side is another Lennon masterpiece of direct simplicity, with John's cynicism to the fore, opening as it does with 'How Does It Feel To Be One Of The Beautiful People ?' ...
Light and shade. Happiness and cynicism. Naivety and skeptical observation. A disc of balanced opposites.

Condition:

This is a Mono recording designed to be played in Mono. Listening on a modern stereo with an elliptical lightweight and thinner dimension stylus will inevitably highlight things that would be hidden playing on a period deck in Mono. That being said, I shall continue:

The disc itself shows just light hairlines to the playing surface, none of which are evident during play, as I've just listened to it all.
There are spindle marks visible around the centre hole on both sides, indicating a reasonable degree of play, but this disc has obviously been well cared for.

Sonically [and I can only speak from the position of having listened on a modern deck] there is a degree of burring at the edges, most noticeable during loud passages. This would indicate the use of a standard period sylus and weight in the past, not some Hi-Fi buff's Garrard. Played on similar period equipment in Mono, this burring would not be as noticable, if heard at all.
That said, this is the modern world and that's how this classic disc will sound on a modern deck with lightweight tone arm.

Like me, you probably don't really care about that as the music is far from exclusive these days. This demo, however, is very hard to come by.

A very nice copy of this hard to find pre-release disc that has been well looked after but has obviously been played a reasonable amount of times.
Not mint, no, but not played to death either and free from the usual writing and gouges that so often plague Beatles' Demonstration Records after a life at a radio station or after being passed on to not-so-careful friends by Reviewers.

The first one we've seen in over thirty years and in much better condition than they are usually found, if you can actually find them at all.
