Beggars Banquet + flyer inserts

ROLLING STONES Beggars Banquet (Impossibly Rare 1969 Japanese promotional-only 10-track stereo vinyl LP, the fourth known copy to reach the online market & one of only two to be offered complete with the flyer inserts. This is a major Stones rarity that has only just come to light in recent years. Housed in a King Record die-cut company sleeve with two flyer inserts pasted to one side, the labels are custom black on white with deep grooves & a unique reversal of the side one & twotracks [the album beginnings with Street Fighting Man]. What's more, this is an actual Japanese pressing, NOT a UK manufactured export, which is the version that was first released to the Japanese buying public. Please see 'more info' for this incredible, mouth-watering Stones discovery from the Far East... PS539)

This album was released to the Japanese public in February 1969. The first Japanese release of this Stones masterpiece was the UK pressed export edition with the Japanese insert & flexi-disc. A rare find in itself, we now know there was a genuine Japanese pressing even before this..... and here it is!
History states that since Decca refused to pass the controversial 'toilet’ cover the group wanted to use for Beggars Banquet, the album's release was delayed several times before being scheduled for December 1968. On December the 5th, the Stones offered a special press party at the Elizabethan Rooms in London, & the day after Beggars Banquet was in the shops with a plain white title cover. The album was released worldwide at the end of the year, but the Japanese had to wait until February '69 for their version.

For unknown reasons, King Records did not press their own stock copies of the album. The Japanese buying public received a very limited UK export release. The labels were custom designed & manufactured in Britain, as was the sleeve.
Very first copies had a bonus double-sided 7" flexi (P-83) including a telephonic interview given by Mick Jagger to a King Records promotion man on 17 April 1968, from London. The cover of this flexi was illustrated with a photograph of the cake-in-the-face press party of 5 December 1968 & the Japanese insert that came with these UK export editions consist of the translation into Japanese of the telephonic interview. The freebie is often related to the 1973 first-proper Japanese-press edition, but it dates to 1969.

Unknown to many, prior to the UK export release for Japan came this exclusive & rare as the proverbial hen's teeth promotional-only version. It appears King Record built up a beautiful promotional package consisting of a white label stereo LP that King pressed themselves [not a UK export]. The album came in a standard King Record company sleeve with ‘sample record’ print on the front & with large holes to show the album labels. Two flyer inserts were included.

Exclusive Custom Labels :-

The labels do not read LONDON or DECCA and have the PS-539 catalog number (as US LONDON copies did). There is a 'deep groove' both sides, unlike the UK export 'ridge' around the middle. The matrix detail is printed on both label sides: XZAL 8477 (SDLBT 751) L / XZAL 8476 (SDLBT 750) L. If these matrices appear back to front, it's because, strangely enough, the sides are reversed. The album starts with ‘Street Fighting Man’ & is closed by ‘Jig-saw Puzzle’.

Flyer Inserts :-

The two custom flyer inserts are pasted to one side of the company sleeve. The first insert is illustrated to show the fold-open album cover & the banquet scene. The second insert gives the (correct) track listing with annotated track length times. This second insert flyer also announces that the album will be released on 20 February 1969!

Condition : -

The vinyl is Excellent to Near Mint. Side One appears Near Mint & Side Two grades Excellent+ with some very faint cosmetic paper wear not affecting play in the slightest. A remarkable find from our man in Japan.

With this being only the fourth known copy to hit the online market place, this is a vital piece of the Beggars Banquet 'jig-saw' & is destined for one very serious Stones collection, indeed.
