THE PRETTY THINGS The Pretty Things (The first thing that I really
ought to tell you here is that you're looking at the back of a copy of
the 1965 12-track mono LP, but this copy has more character than
potential 'Fi'. Without beating around the bush, this album looks like it
has done just that. Been to & survived all the parties along the way,
remaining playable despite all odds and a vast number of surface
scrapings, thanks to being pressed on vinyl that was more like granite
& twiceas durable. The sleeve is dog eared, creased, with large areas of
laminate lift and nice damaged flipbacks. Looking at the unlaminated
back, you can clearly see the rings from previous beverage containers
that have been rested upon it.
This copy, however, is
wonderful.
Although it can no longer be regarded as an LP,
just scraping into a G grade realistically, the beauty is in the scribblings
on the back. If you look closely, you will discern not just the previous
owner's name written thereupon, but also the autographs of Phil
May, Dick Taylor, Viv Prince & the late Brian Pendleton.
Hidden within Phil May's distinctive autograph is also that of one
John Stax. In other words, here is a complete set of
extremely early Pretties autographs on their debut LP that would really
look the part if framed. This wasn't an album of music to look at, this
was an album to be partied and partied hard, and it was. Now it is to
look at after all, as it has graced the hands of the members of one of
the finest R&B bands that Britain ever produced TL5239)
