Get The Picture ?

THE PRETTY THINGS Get The Picture ? (Extremely rare 1966 SOUTH AFRICAN pressing of the classic 12-track mono second LP from the Pretties in a unique flipback picture sleeve variant. The flimsy sleeve is in stark contrast to the brick builtUK version, but has nonetheless survived the passage of time very well indeed. The vinyl is astonishing. Tracklisting & More Information

Now regarded as a British R&B classic, at the time this great LP failed to make an impression. As a result few copies were sold and it is now incredibly hard to find.

So, where to start with this treasure from one of the best R&B bands on the circuit at the time ?

Ok. Let's go from the outside in ...

The Sleeve:

This is a unique front laminated flipback variant, with similar artwork to the UK release. Both front and back have been Library stickered, with the back having in addition a rubber stamp proclaiming 'Springbok Radio Library' and the date '26-4-1966'.
Being an ex-radio library copy, the album obviously spent the formative years of its life being very well cared for. Although the laminate has split a bit at the spine, the spine is still clearly readable & the top & bottom seams are scuff free. The only other minor points to note is a little laminate lift at the spine & one spot near the opening. Believe me, these are insignificant!
The unlaminated back has not fared quite so well & there's a little light shelfwear & a couple of spots of discolouration, but hell's panties, this is from South Africa and it's over forty five years old. The big clue here, apart from the flipback design & the catalogue number is the 'Record Pac' printers text at the bottom.
It's hard to describe the incredible buzz that seeing this album in this condition gave me. In hard technical terms, I suppose you'd have to say VG/VG+ but it really does FEEL better than that. For now, you will have to make do with the scans, but this really is lovely.

The Disc:

This is library stickered on the A-side label, which follows the familiar black & silver Fontana design of the period, as used in the UK. The biggest difference is the text of the publishing credits which are different to the UK versions, specifically dated 'February 1966' & with '(Pty.) Ltd' after the publisher name & their smooth nature as opposed to the rough label UK equivalent.
'The Pretty Things' band name is actually in as small a font as the song text, but in bold. The centre is remarkably free of wear or excessive spindle marks. All in all the labels are clean & all round spiffy.

The vinyl has a few obvious surface hairlines on both sides, and visually this would again be graded VG/VG+. Upon playtesting [as we don't get this rare album in often & it's great!] we discovered that all music is crisp & well defined as only those solid sixties mono presses were. Surface noise of any kind was reduced to a little ambient crackling in places between songs & in some quiet passages, but nothing of note. It certainly plays a very good EX/EX+, despite the surface hairlines, which are obviously far more cosmetic than material.

So, let's sum up.

It's an incredible sixties mono pressing, even more incredible considering its origin. A fantastic copy that just screams 'quality' at you, however you look or listen to it.

A jewel in the crown.
