STEVE REICH & THE KRONOS QUARTET Different Trains (1989
German first press 6-track LP, a stunning three-movement piece for
string quartet & tape, a novel experiment at the time, using recorded
speech as a source for melodies. Reich even transfered the speech
recordings into a digital sampling keyboard (a Casio FZ-1), & won the
Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition that year.
Never fear Pat Metheny fans, Electric Counterpoint on the other side is
equally as special & was later performed in concert as a tribute by
Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. Complete with the album insert, the
picture sleeve is Excellent with the odd small corner crease & the vinyl
appears near 'as new')

STEVE REICH Early Works (Essential 1987 German 4-track vinyl
LP by Reich, the techno prophecy, at his most inspired. To quote
The Wire mag, in 1965 San Francisco, Reich experimented with
two identical tape loops he had recorded of a black Pentecostal
preacher. Letting the loops go slightly out of phase, he became
mesmerised by the complex sub-rhythms & voices morphing into
pulsing Minimalist music. 'It's Gonna Rain' lifts those three words
from the sermon & sends them skyward. In 1966he pushed the
voice of Daniel Hamm, arrested in the Harlem riots of 1964, even
further towards a morass of hypnotic vibrations around the
phrase "Come out to show them". The piture sleeve shows very
little wear, this copy has a very small sticker to the backcover
and the vinyl is Near Mint)

STEVE REICH Works: 1965-1995 (Rare 1997 US 83-track, 10CD
boxset, housed in a deluxe hardback slipcase with 136 page booklet.
Superb and definitive overview of one of the pioneers of minimalism
and contemporary classical, includes his early experiments with
'phasing' and tape loops from 1965 [It's Gonna Rain, Piano Phase]
through to a blending of African percussion with modern classical
techniques recorded in 1974 [Drumming] up to what is often regarded
as his finest work; Different Trains/Electric Counterpoint from 1986.
The box shows only light shelfwear, the discs and booklet are in
wonderful 'as new' condition. Reich's influence on modern music is
profound, with early work prefiguring digiital sampling techniques, the
incorporation of world music techniques alongside some moments of
real beauty too - a must!)
