APPLE LABEL A is For Apple (Rare 1960s UK Photogravure poster print, designed for the Apple Boutique by the Dutch art & design collective The Fool who, at the height of swinging London, had fallen into the Beatles orbit [it was The Fool that gave Lennon's Rolls Royce a psychedelic makeover!]. Charged with designing and stocking the newly opened Apple Boutique, the collective set to work producing numerous murals, paintings, posters and all manner of psychedelic oddities. Now 50 yearson the Fool's designs have become so iconic they encapsulate the visual language of the era, the store itself was a financial disaster and lasted for less than a year [most things that weren't nailed down tended to go walkies!], needless to say, original posters from the Apple Boutique don't come up for sale very often! The poster has been professionally framed & glazed with a red surround mount, brown wooden frame with golden inlay and measure 27" x 34". The previous owner won a bid at Christie's South Kensington, and the item still has the original lot number on the glazed front with the original paper work on the reverse, how's that for provenance! APPLE LABEL Ernest Trova 'Falling Man' Series Signed And Numbered Print (Rare 1967 UK limited edition 24" square colour lithograph print which has been signed and numbered 60/75 by the artist in pencil at the bottom. The print is mounted in a32" brushed aluminium bordered frame with the print block itself bordered with brushed aluminum, giving a recessed effect. Ernest Trova was an important proponent of American Pop Art and the complex "Falling Man" series is among Trova's most important works. Making this piece unique is the purchase docket from Redfern Gallery of Bond Street, London on the reverse, which clearly states that it was purchased by Apple Corps on November 11th 1968 for eighty nine ponds and five shillings. It should be said that the frame is in need of a few repairs, with one strip of brushed aluminium missing and there are a few minor blemishes to the lithograph, but nothing that could not be easily restored to its former glory. APPLE SCRUFFS The Apple Scruff Monthly Book (Fantastic & extremely nostalgic 1971 UK only 9-sheet fanzine produced by the 'Apple Scruffs', who were a bunch of people who seemed to live almost permanently on the steps outside the Apple Building. They became so much a part of the scene at Apple that they eventually designed Apple Christmas cards for them. This astonishing curio is photocopied single sided sheets, stapled together to form a booklet, much in the style of the 'Fanzine' that was to surface but five years later. For the princely sum of 10p [which would happily buy you a cup of tea then, even in London], you could treat yourself to cartoons, jokes, words of wisdom & fashion advice from the celebrated Scruffs. At the same time, happy in the knowledge that you'd helped them along in their world record breaking Step sitting marathon. As a special bonus, this issue comes with a fold out cartoon that makes a rather pointed comment about the then current fashion of everybody sueing each other, with Mr McCartney coming in for particular attention! APPLE LABEL Memorandum: Proposed Apple Xmas Party (Amazing 1972 UK duplicated memorandum that was distributed to Apple employees on 27th November that year. It reads more like 'For The Benefit Of Mr Kite' than any Christmas party you would be familiar with, with the guests dining on Spam & Chips, a gymnastic display, lectures on furniture design, a raffle in which one of the prizes is Henley-On-Thames & a panto with Allen Klein as 'Bashful'. I suspect that this was a spoof & that theyall ended up going down the pub, but this would have been circulated to prompt ideas as to which pub. The three sheets of photocopied Festive Frivolity are in lovely condition, having been rescued from their desktop [& the Christmas Party] at Apple nearly forty years ago & stored for posterity ever since. Inside a plain A4 loose leaf folder is a treasure trove of photographs, proofs, texts & trivia including the proof text for the 'Inside The Crazy World Of Apple' promo booklet along with the original Tom Hanley pictures that were used in it, several photographic contact sheets including one containing shots for the Apple Postcard & some original Koch Apple designs plus thirty four black & white photographs taken as the concept for the Apple logo evolved.
