Tracklisting & More Information

This was The Beatles' FIRST official L.P. release & for this one time the mono version was issued 6 weeks BEFORE the stereo version.

The album contained the "A" and "B" sides of their first two singles, plus 10 new songs ALL recorded in one incredible session at Abbey Road. The session cost just £400 and lasted 16 hours.

It took exactly 6 months to pass the sales figure of 250,000 and went on to sell over 500,000 copies in the U.K. with world sales of almost two million.
It still holds the record for the longest continuous stay at number 1

The cover photo was taken at EMI's Manchester Sq. headquarters by Angus McBean, and the sleeve notes are by Tony Barrow.

MONO/STEREO DIFFERENCES

"Please Please Me" The stereo version has John making a mistake in the words of the final verse, which causes him to chuckle in the final chorus ... these are NOT heard in the mono version

CONDITION

The all important black and gold Parlophone labels are in fine condition but with obvious wear around the spindle area. There is no writing or other blemish. The gold text is striking and clearly legible with no fading. As previously stated this is the first pressing with Dick James Music Co credit for Please Please Me, Misery, I Saw Her Standing There & Do You Want To Know A Secret & small text "33 1/3".

The machine stamped matrix numbers and stampers in the dead vinyl confirm that this was one of the first pressed as both sides end -1 with G & R stamper letters.

The matrix numbers are as follows :

Side One YEX 94-1/R
Side Two YEX 95-1/G

The condition of this item is very difficult to describe and would need to be seen and heard to be truly appreciated.

The vinyl is not without marks. This is an understatement.
Most copies of this album when released were taken to parties and played endlessly, often scratched until they were unplayable. This copy has been played and obviously much loved but, having just played the entire album through, the sound quality is astonishing. There are no marks that cause any major obtrusive pops, clicks or jumps.
Some background noise is evident on intros, quieter passages and linking grooves but that is all.
I couldn't believe just HOW good this copy sounded - it blew me away.
It looks like it should be made into a flowerpot, but actually plays with a clarity & punch that makes the EMI CD reissue look sick!

Had this been a later pressing in this condition it would have been unplayable, but this first pressing on heavyweight vinyl & properly pressed is amazing and, even with the obvious marks plays without fault & the all important music retains its clarity.

From a visual grading point of view, this copy would be graded FAIR, but from a listening point of view it is at least VG - Incredible!

The Ernest J Day front laminated, flipback picture sleeve with large block Stereo logo on the front is showing several signs of being 42 years old.
The Angus McBean photo on the front of the sleeve has retained it's rich colours but the edges & corners are quite seriously scuffed with light laminate creasing at the edges.
The Angus McBean credit is at the FAR RIGHT, indicating a matching first print sleeve.

The spine is still legible & the flipbacks are intact but the bottom of the sleeve is split for ¾ of it's length with a 2½" chunk of the bottom flipback missing on the back.
There is some obvious staining to the back in places, a name and one other area of writing in blue ballpoint pen.
The Tony Barrow sleeve notes are still clearly legible however.

All in all this is a fair copy of this legendary rare album that would make a great entry level collectable at this advantageous price. Being this playable will also preserve your investment.

You may well have the CD or a later mint vinyl pressing & so just wish to frame this or have it to complete your collection, but I urge you to actually put this copy on your turntable & give this one a listen and be as amazed as we were !
