Tracklisting & More Information

The Beatles Yesterday & Today album was released in the US by Capitol Records on June 15th 1966. The cover featured a highly controversial picture of the group dressed in white butcher smocks showing raw cuts of meat and parts of toy dolls strewn about their apperal.

The album was issued to radio stations and stores in advance of release and caused such an uproar that it was recalled.

As so many copies of the offensive cover had already been manufactured at great cost it was decided that rather than scrap these covers and reprint, a different picture slick showing the group around a luggage trunk would be printed and pasted over the offensive sleeve.

As news spread of the picture underneath people tried to peel off the new slick to reveal the picture underneath with varying success.

A butcher cover as issued by Capitol in its natural state is known as a first state copy. Mono copies in good condition fetch many thousands of dollars, regardless of condition, stereo copies fetch even more since there were 20 times more mono than stereo copies produced.

A butcher cover with the trunk cover slick pasted over the top is known as a second state. If you look carefully at the white area on the right hand side of the sleeve, Ringos black V-neck sweater can be seen through the replacement slick.

Lastly a butcher sleeve with the trunk cover slick peeled off is known as a third state. It is very rare that a trunk cover slick can be removed without damaging the butcher picture underneath.

Very few copies were reportedly sold in stores with this cover in its first state and a first state stereo copy in reasonable condition will now cost the collector in excess of $10,000!

Condition :-

Ringo's black sweater is clearly visible in the white area of the pasted over trunk cover and is therefore quite obviously a genuine 'second state' butcher sleeve. The trunk slick has been placed only ever so slightly off centre leaving the left hand edge slightly exposed.

The labels are Capitol rainbow rim in design with clear bright text, no blemishes or excessive spindlemarks & 'MFD BY CAPITOL' text on the label black area inside the colourband border.

The vinyl is in fair condition with wear to the grooves & multiple scratches. As the vinyl is identical to a later 'Trunk' sleeve first pressing, the condition of the vinyl is not really much of an issue.

This copy is complete with the correct period 'Capitol 66' advertising inner, give or take a few edge splits, and a copy of the recall letter as sent out by Ron Tepper from Capitol explaining the recall.

The all important front slick is in superb unpeeled condition. This particular example has a large amount of foxing on the back panel, often a natural occurence with time. All text remains clearly legible & there is no writing. The front panel reveals very little of the same type of foxing & otherwise just some light scuff marks. The edges have a fair amount of scuffing & the odd spot of paper loss as to be expected.

A very worthwhile addition to any serious Beatles collection.
We would recommend upgrading the vinyl at some point if you wish to play the item, but for display as an unpeeled 'Butcher' sleeve, this copy is the one.
