THE FALL Last Night At The Palais: Live At Hammersmith Palais April 1st 2007 (2009 UK 2-disc [CD/DVD] set - On January 21st 2007, the Hammersmith Palais, one of London's most historic music venues was condemned to suffer the fate of other prestigious halls in the capital and in the name of homogenous urban progress, close its doors to be converted into an office complex and restaurant. By a strange quirk of fate, the last band to ever play there was The Fall. Their Hammersmith gig on1st April had been booked as part of their 20 date UK spring tour to promote the release of their 27th album, 'Reformation Post TLC'. Never one to play a greatest hits set, Smith with this seven-piece though short-lived line-up which mixed the US and UK wings of the band delivered a mainly recent, forthcoming and unreleased set of songs to the capacity crowd. The only concessions to The Fall's 80's & 90's repertoire being 'Right Place, Wrong Time' and 'White Lightning'. Whilst not quite the sending-off that some die-hard Palais supporters had visualised [one stage invader rallied against the lack of recognition to the occasion from Smith and co.], it was certainly a memorable one which is thankfully captured here in The Fall's inimitable way! The Fall (2010 issue UK Omnibus Edition 50-track 4-CD album set - Originally released in 1984, 'The Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall' was the band's eighth studio album and their first for Beggars Banquet. This release chronicles that year; from the full integration of Brix Smith into the group, the introduction of John Leckie as the recording producer, the BBC sessions, live shows, changes in the line-up and the rise of a wider appreciation for The Fall's music. The first CD edition [issued in 1988] followed the extended track sequence of the cassette but for this Omnibus Edition the album has been re-mastered from the studio analogue tapes and restored to its original nine song format with all additional tracks on Disc 2. Disc 3 gathers all the relevant BBC sessions: not only a John Peel session recorded in December 1983 [the earliest recordings of 'The Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall' material] but also previously unreleased sessions from David Jensen and Janice Long, as well as a 'Saturday Live' recording. Disc 4 is a live recording made by VPRO radio at Pandora's Music Box festival in The Netherlands, and is remarkably perky considering The Fall took to the stage for their headline set at 3.15am on a Sunday morning.
