JOHNNY WINTER The Progressive Blues Experiment / Johnny Winter
(2010 Australian exclusive 19-track CD album - Raven
presents for the first time on one CD two classic albums: 'The
Progressive Blues Experiment' [1968] and 'Johnny Winter' [1969].
Recorded for Sonobeat [later licensed to Imperial] and Columbia
respectively, these rowdy, rip-roarin', raucous and positively smokin'
albums saw Winter kicking his career into high gear. He'd been
playing around the Texas bar circuit since the early 1960s before
being discovered and thrust onto the national circuit with a major
article in Rolling Stone and an appearance at Woodstock. Paying
tribute to his blues heroes - Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Robert Johnson,
Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin'
Hopkins - Winter played blues as if his life depended on it and without
a hint of rock commercialism. 'The Progressive Blues Experiment' set
the template with unforgettable versions of ‘Rollin' and Tumblin',
‘Forty-Four', ‘It's My Own Fault' and ‘Help Me' plus dynamic
self-penned tracks ‘Mean Town Blues' and ‘Black Cat Bone'. His major
label debut, 'Johnny Winter', remains one of his best recordings, with
Winter tearing it up with total abandon on ‘I'm Yours and I'm Hers',
‘Leland Mississippi Blues', ‘Be Careful With A Fool' and ‘Back Door
Friend'. With superb quality audio, detailed liner notes and color
booklet, this top value 2-for-1 release is a must for fans of timeless
electric blues rock. If you only get one CD of Winter, this is the one to
have)
