By the time Parallel Lines arrived in 1978, Blondie had decisively shifted from their retro-influenced roots into something sharper, broader and unmistakably contemporary. With veteran producer Mike Chapman at the controls, the band's third album refocused on Debbie Harry's cool, magnetic vocal presence and Clem Burke's driving, precise drumming, reshaping their sound into a sleek blend of new wave, power pop and disco-inflected rock. The results were transformative: "Heart Of Glass" became a global chart-topper, "One Way Or Another" delivered taut, angular pop aggression, and the opening cover of "Hanging On The Telephone" announced a band operating with new confidence and scale.
