Experiments With Pops

THE GORDON BECK QUARTET Experiments With Pops (1968 UK 8-track Stereo vinyl LP on the deep groove red & white Majpr Minor label, featuring a very young John McLaughlin, one of the most creative jazz quartet albums ever recorded in Europe yet still widely overlooked and underappreciated at the time, front laminated picture sleeve. The sleeve displays just light wear and age discolouration with a small sticker mark on the back, the labels remain clean with just a couple of marks aroundthe spindle hole, and the vinyl remains excellent with only light signs of play. A fantastic example and the first we have ever had SMLP21)

Tracklisting & More Information

Gordon Beck is one of the unsung heroes of British jazz, clearly at the top of his game when recording Experiments With Pops. The album features the pianist backed by a then unknown John McLaughlin on guitar, together with bassist Jeff Clyne and drummer Tony Oxley. This quartet perform to impeccably high standards with expert handling of modern popular tunes such as These Boots Are Made For Walking, Norwegian Wood, I Can See For Miles and Good Vibrations, all reinterpreted in a modern jazz context. The results are both challenging but highly accessible at the same time. This makes for an album that is consistently enjoyable throughout and one you'll want to come back to again and again. Highly recommended!
