Tracklisting: Gordon Beck is one of the unsung heroes of British jazz, clearly at the top of his game when recording Experiments With Pops. The album features the pianist backed by a then unknown John McLaughlin on guitar, together with bassist Jeff Clyne and drummer Tony Oxley. This quartet perform to impeccably high standards with expert handling of modern popular tunes such as These Boots Are Made For Walking, Norwegian Wood, I Can See For Miles and Good Vibrations, all reinterpreted in a modern jazz context. The results are both challenging but highly accessible at the same time. This makes for an album that is consistently enjoyable throughout and one you'll want to come back to again and again. Highly recommended!
