Tracklisting & More Information

Songs The Lord Taught Us is the debut album by the simultaneously minimalist and over-the-top retro-shlockabilly kings The Cramps. It was sympathetically produced by their fellow devotee of Southern culture on the skids Alex Chilton. Poison Ivy's guitar work here is her usual mix of trashcan chording and distorted surf riffs, and singer Lux Interior is in particularly good faux-Elvis form on such instant classics of self-aggrandisement as 'The Mad Daddy' and 'I'm Cramped'. The band also throws in some interesting covers here including the Rock and Roll Trio's 'Tear It Up' and a version of '60s grunge pioneers the Sonics' 'Strychnine' that's so primitive it makes theoriginal sound like Yes by comparison!

The above is a pretty accurate desciption of the classic debut album, however before the album was issued it was intended to be distributed with a different tracklisting, a tracklisting that included the single 'Drug Train' as the album's opener. Why this song was left off of the final mix and replaced with 'TV Set' is a mystery, however the only way to hear the album as it was originally intended is to play this white label.

The tracklisting for the white label is as follows

Side One
1. Drug Train
2. Garbageman
3. Rock On The Moon
4. I Was A Teenage Werewolf
5. Sunglasses After Dark
6. Strychnine
7. Mad Daddy

Side Two
1. Mystery Plane
2. Zombie Dance
3. I'm Cramped
4. What's Behind The Mask
5. Tear It Up
6. Fever

The Tracklist of the regular issue is as follows

Side One
1. TV Set
2. Rock On The Moon
3. Garbageman
4. I Was A Teenage Werewolf
5. Sunglasses After Dark
6. The Mad Daddy

Side Two
1. Mystery Plane
2. Zombie Dance
3. What's Behind The Mask
4. Strychnine
5. I'm Cramped
6. Tear It Up
7. Fever

The matrix numbers are also different between the regular and white label.
The regular issue has the matrix numbers ILP005A2/ILP005B2, while the white label has the numbers ILP005A1/ILP005B1 etched into the run-out groove.

The white label is issued in a full colour picture sleeve similar to the regular issue, however there is one minor difference in that the tracklisting on the rear of the sleeve of regular issue is printed in purple, whereas the sleeve housing the white label has the tracklisting printed in white. More puzzling though is the fact that both sleeves have identical tracklistings featuring the regular 'TV Set' tracklisting!

For comparison we will include a copy of the regular UK issue LP as part of the sale.

Both the regular issue and the white label have come from the same collection and both vinyls and sleeves are in perfect mint condition with no imperfections of any kind.
