Revised Music For Low Budget Symphony Orchestra

FRANK ZAPPA Revised Music For Low Budget Symphony Orchestra (Unique 1972 US score for the entire piece as HAND WRITTEN by FZ, complete with Frank's own annotations - time signature changes, effect settings etc. Running across EIGHTEEN sheets of stave, as it does, it still seems incredible that Frank actually hand wrote each of the parts for the twenty piece band arrangements & even more incredible that it still survives in pristine condition thirty seven years later. Thescore itself is unusual in that it has the entire orchestral arrangement at concert pitch, implying that this was the Conductor's score, in other words Frank's OWN score. This manuscript comes from the personal collection of Marty Perellis, who was the road manager for the tour & has also been authenticated by David Ocker who, later, became Zappa's music copyist [1977-1984]. Another one-off piece of history that, for my money, knocks an autograph into a cocked hat - An FZ original score TRANSCRIBED PERSONALLY by FZ for the legendary Grand Wazoo Orchestra - It doesn't get much better than this!)

Tracklisting & More Information

Unusual as it is to get an entire score, to get one at concert pitch is very special indeed as it strongly implies that it is Frank's own personal Conductor score.

The piece was originally composed for Jean-Luc Ponty for his 'King Kong' album, but was fairly regularly worked on right through to a 1975 orchestral performance & its appearance in slightly mutated form on Studio Tan, the 'official WB bootleg' chunk of Läther.

Another interesting factoid about this piece, knowing that it dates to the eight show Grand Wazoo Orchestra period, is that it was only performed ONCE.
It was used as an intro segment for the 'Dog Meat' medley at the Hollywood Bowl on 10th September 1972, where Frank was supported by Tim Buckley & The Doors.
With this as the intro segment, the whole piece became entitled 'Low Budget Dog Meat', although this part was dropped after the first show.

With a super sized band like this, improvisation became a risky business, so was kept to a minimum with FZ rehearsing each set in its entirety before each performance, in addition to the usual intense rehearsals prior to the tour.
This dates the score pretty firmly to summer 1972.
