GENESIS Wind & Wuthering (1976 UK small Madhatter label
9-track vinyl LP, A beautifully atmospheric release, Wind &
Wuthering marked Genesis’ eighth studio album and the final
appearance of guitarist Steve Hackett, who would depart
following the subsequent tour – closing out the band’s
revered 'classic' era.
Recorded at Relight Studios in the Netherlands and released in
December 1976, the album showcases a refined blend of
progressive rock complexity and emerging melodic
sensibilities. Highlights include the sweeping instrumental
suite Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers.../...In That Quiet
Earth, inspired by Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and the
exquisite Blood on the Rooftops, a rare but much-loved gem
penned by Hackett and Phil Collins. The single Your Own
Special Way, written by Mike Rutherford, hinted at the more
accessible direction the band would explore in later years,
and remains a live staple.
Other standouts include the energetic opener Eleventh Earl of
Mar and the moody epic One for the Vine, which showcases
Tony Banks’ virtuosic keyboard work. With a seamless blend
of classical-influenced arrangements, lyrical introspection,
and a pastoral English tone, this album has since become a
cult favourite among fans of 1970s progressive rock.textured
