The Vinyl
The original labels on this classic album are matt black with Parlophone in bright yellow lettering & all other text in silver print. The perimeter text states 'The Gramophone Co Ltd' with 'Sold In The UK Subject To Resale' across the centre of the labels. There are some spindle marks around the centre hole to show play & there is no writing or label tears.
The matrix numbers are XEX 637-1 on side one and XEX 638-1 on side two.
The vinyl is clean & grades VG. Playback is exceptional given this is the original mono pressing with the trusty -1 matrices in the run-outs. There are some light surface hairlines both sides but thanks to the quality sixties pressing, these are rendered mostly inaudible, although a certain level of light surface noise & the odd pop or click may be heard on occasion. This is a great opportunity to get a highly respectable copy of this super rare 4th Proof variant version of the LP without having to pay a MUCH higher price for an archive copy!
The Sleeve
The 'Fourth Proof' sleeve is one of the first copies of Sgt. Pepper to have run off of the presses at EMI as just a very small number were made up for final review by the Beatles prior to full scale printing. However, EMI were notorious for watching every penny (even with Beatles releases) so these sleeves
were put back into stock & used with the regular sleeves on the first part of the initial run.
Figures vary, but range from a very small fifty or so to a thousand. Our estimate would be from one to a few hundred, based on an economical quantity to print of sufficient size that they were then passed to the production stage rather than being destroyed. The total number of copies we have found of a 'fourth proof' in all our years trading could still be counted on one hand.
The cutouts insert shows a little wear along the top edge but is free of any rips or tears.
The original 'flame' inner is in Excellent condition just a little wear around the edges.
The fully laminated Garrod & Lofthouse gatefold sleeve grades Very Good.
There is some wear to the spine with minor corner scuffing.
The laminate is clean & the colours remain rich & vivid. This highly prized version of the sleeve has the mega rare 'Patents Pending' text on the back, bottom right & the 'Fourth Proof' text on the internal flipback is bright & clear in the right corner along with 'AR' & 'D1321' printed upside down on the left. This was not intended to have been made into a production sleeve & is now very sought after, the main selling point here. We are unlikely to find another one of these any time soon!

Tracklisting: The eleventh studio album by the American group, released on the 16th May 1966, this was initially met with a lukewarm critical and commercial reception in the United States, but received immediate success abroad. Now regarded as one of the most influential pieces in the history of popular music along side The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (released in 1967).
Condition
The front laminated flipback picture sleeve shows a few light signs of light discolouration, grading VG. The colours remain bright & vivid & all text is clearly legible, with obvious creasing/ringwear. The edges are sharp with no seam splits.
The labels have no writing or tears & just a few minor spindle marks around the centre hole to show play. The vinyl shows its fair share of scuffs and hairlines (mainly grouped around the end of Here Today and I Just Wasn't Made For These Times) and grades as G with noise in those places. This is a classic album that no collection should be without & now very affordable as a first press at a knockdown price.

Condition
Housed in the original Ernest J Day manufactured front laminated picture sleeve, the cover appears EX- with no writing or tears. There is some light spine scuffing which has rendered a little of the text illegible & minor ageing to the laminate including some light creasing to the right hand side bottom corner; the colours are still vivid with minimal discolouring to the back panel. A very nice example.
The labels are black with silver print & large Track Record logo at the top. There is some spindle marks visible around the centre although the labels remain bright & clean with no writing or tears.
The matrix numbers end A-1/B-1 indicating that this copy was one of the first pressed. They are as follows

The vinyl has been professionally cleaned on a Matrix machine. On first listen, we were startled at just how different this original mono mix sounds. Visually, the vinyl reveals a handful of minor scuffs but these are not deep enough to affect play, and thanks to the quality of sixties vinyl pressings from this period, the mono playback does not stray, and these marks remain purely cosmetic. All be told, a very healthy VG+/EX- copy. |
