| JOY DIVISION An Ideal For Living EP (Super rare original
1978 UK 4-track 7" vinyl EP on the bands own Enigma label,
including Warsaw, No Love Lost, Leaders Of Men & Failures Of
The Modern Man, fold-out Hitler Youth drummer boy picture
sleeve that was folded by the band themselves. This
legendary item has its own place in Joy Division history
PSS139) For more information regarding the story and
condition of this item, see 'More Info' ...
Tracklisting: HISTORY
This four track 7" EP was recorded at the Pennine Sound Studio, Oldham in December 1977 when the band were still known as WARSAW. It was eventually released in the summer of 1978 on the bands' own Enigma label, after the band name change to Joy Division.
This was their first official release before signing to the legendary Factory Records label and only 1000 copies were pressed. Given how few surface these days, it begs the question of just how many still survive.
The sleeve, which showed a controversial image of a Hitler Youth drumming boy alongside the 'Joy Division!' name, folds out into a 14" x 14" poster sleeve which was designed by band guitarist Bernard Albrecht (nee Sumner). Legend has it that the band had to fold the sleeves and add the vinyl 7"s themselves.
Recorded on a shoestring budget in December 1977, the audio of this pressing known for it's low cost, lo-fi sound is certainly not of audiophile quality and which led to the subsquent 12" repressing with alternative artwork later on. Upon play testing, it is free of any surface noise and and captures a band refining their sound in the most pure form.
The 7" has been the subject of various counterfeit 're-issues' but most have been on coloured vinyl and none have the anti slip ring around the label as can be seen on the originals.
CONDITION
The matt black label has silver lettering with the catalogue number PSS139. Both have a few minor marks around the spindle hole but have no major marks or paper loss.
Matrix numbers read:
PSS-139-EP-A-1 EG
PSS-139-EP-B-1 EG
The vinyl is strictly graded as Good, with some noticeable surface marks and light scratches. We have professionally cleaned and play tested, and can confirm that apart from some noticeably deteriorated in sound quality, this plays through without skipping.
The sleeve folds out into a single sided 14" poster size. The overall condition is Very Good, it has remained a nice off white with little discolouration. There is a smalll amount of creasing evident to the edges, and has a minor one inch split to the minddle fold at the top (bottom when opened up fully).
This particular copy, like all of them, was bought directly from the band at the time of release.
This historical record is easily the Holy Grail for any serious Joy Division collector, and is deserving of its place in musical history given the legacy of the influential Manchester band that it spawned.
Although far from mint, is still nice to have in any collection.
Do not miss out!
