Shania Twain became the most popular country music artist since Garth Brooks. Skillfully fusing mainstream, AOR rock production with country-pop, along with her producer/husband 'Mutt' Lange created a commercial juggernaut with her second album, The Woman in Me. The record went multi platinum, eventually selling over nine million copies in America alone. She may have been a commercial success but critics often accused her of diluting country with bland, anthemic hard rock and of shamelessly selling her records with sexy videos. She made the total cross-over with 1997's Come On Over which surpassed its predecessor selling an astonishing 36 million copies worldwide, Shania had become a country music phenomenon. The follow up 'Up!' was released in 2002 and further cemented her place as the Queen of 'new country'.
