Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar bringing it to the fore more than anybody had ever done. When he burst on to the scene in 1967, it was like he had been beamed down from another planet, when in fact he had served a long and arduous apprenticeship in a variety of R&B outfits. When the Jimi Hendrix Experience emerged they became stars almost immediately in the U.K. Jimi was also a first-rate songwriter, an excellent interpreter of the blues and although not the best, a passionate and engaging singer. Amazingly, Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime. There have of course been numerous posthumous releases since Jimi's death in 1970 and it's mainly the studio material which has been the focus of enormous controversy for over 20 years.
