Tracklisting & More Information

Condition :-

Obtained from a wonderful collection of modern jazz LP rarities of the 1950s, with many bought as exotic imports at the time of release, here we have a one previous owner example for the dedicated Blue Note collector of J.J. Johnson's first body of work on LP, an essential part of modern jazz history or what one critic called 'one of the central documents of post-war jazz'. If you're a trombonist, you'll want to hear this at least!

The pasted picture sleeve [VG+] is the earliest pressing for this title. It has the '767 Lexington Ave., New York 21' address printed on the back at the bottom. The back cover has two period British tax import stickers attached & the catalogue inner is enclosed. The panels are nice & clean, kept out of direct sunlight for well over half a century. The edges remains sharp & there are no seam splits or writing. There is some minor scuffing to a few edges & there is a very small thumbnail split in the paper in the centre of the spine. All print is clearly legible & the artwork still shines. Most certainly a collector's copy!

The labels are in stunning condition. Although there is no 'deep groove' ridge either side, there are no tears, writing or any heavy spindle marks by the centre hole. The earliest 'Lexington Ave' address is printed on side one & the 'West 63rd' address is on side two. There is no 'r' registered logo below 'Note' either side as this is a pre-1960 pressing & most certainly a pre-Liberty [1966] pressing as the Plastylite 'ear' logo is etched in both run-outs along with the Rudy Van Gelder 'RVG' stamp.

The heavyweight vinyl is Excellent to Near Mint with an impressive sheen both sides & only the lightest evidence of one or two plays in its lifetime. There are no scratches or marks, just the odd ultra-faint paper hairline from being taken out of the bag on the rare occasion. It's very hard to find a Blue Note mono pressing from the fifties in this type condition so this one comes highly recommended.
