Tracklisting & More Information

These unique acetate discs were obtained from a fan who was there at the birth of modern jazz in Britain, actively recording & privately pressing plates of the historic action witnessed first hand.

The discs run at a very slow pace in order to fit as much on as possible, thus they require several pitch ups in speed in order to be played correctly. The venue location remains unknown. Digging deeper, we know that the Ronnie Scott Group played the BBC World Service broadcast from the Paris Cinema Studio in London on February 10th, 1953 as it was documented for an Esquire disc. We might leap to the conclusion that these recordings are London based & perhaps, pre-Ronnie Scott's, come from the Soho Flamingo club. The resident band was Kenny Graham's after all & the club became particularly well known for its weekend "all-nighters" at this point.

Here are the exact details taken from the labels:

February 4th 1953
Harry South Trip with Tubby Hayes - Bud's Bubble
The Ronnie Scott Group - Seven Eleven Part I & II/ Night & Day/ Trottin'/ Scott Theme

February 11th 1953
Joe Muddel's Group - Royal Roost/ Muddel's Them/ Out Of Nowhere
The Tubby Hayes Quartet - Just One Of Those Things/ S'Wonderful Part I & II

February 18th 1953
The Kenny Graham Group - Strike Up The Band
The Kenny Graham Group - Indian Summer

Now these are rough amateur recordings & the microphone used was limiting to say the least. The ambience of the room is heard & there is microphone movement on occasion. The surface of these acetates show some natural cosmetic wear & some light scuffs & would benefit from a professional clean [distilled water only]. Warts & all, these recordings are of great historical importance. They represent the earliest found recordings of Tubby Hayes as a leader at the tender age of eighteen. They can only be played so many times... these recordings were almost lost forever!
