Tracklisting & More Information

The EP is mostly comprised of tracks the band cut back in 1985 in hopes of attracting major label attention. Obviously, no takers were found. After listening to this record, you might conclude that the label people who passed on these songs must have been on crack. Well probably it was coke, so you'd be partially right. If you know your pop history, you know that '85 was the year that music really turned to shit. Good pop songs were out; hair bands, drum machines, and the Miami Vice soundtrack were in. The Little Girls split, and would seemingly be regarded as a mere footnote in the history of new wave pop, destined to be remembered by nostalgia trippers for the early MTV clip "How To Pick Up Girls" and the Rodney on The Roq/Valley Girl favorite "The Earthquake Song".

But if The Clear Album proves anything, it's that The Little Girls were miles beyond the new wave novelty acts to whom they are often compared. Caron and Michele Maso were fantastic singers who specialized in rich harmonies a la The Everly Brothers. And they were terrific songwriters as well. Out of The Clear Album sessions came a cover of The Dave Clark Five's "Any Way You Want It" plus two originals: "Not A Perfect World" and "I Really Want To Be With You". The latter should have been a massive radio hit - and probably would have been if it had been recorded just three years earlier. So much of the music of the '80s has aged poorly and has no value beyond pure nostalgia. Yet The Clear Album could easily pass for a new & vital release in this age of powerpop renaissance. Legend has it that these songs were recorded in secret late at night in a "very huge and well-known movie studio". Band manager Toby Mamis brought in Blondie's Clem Burke and Nigel Harrison to back the Caso sisters and guitarist Kip Brown. No wonder these songs sound like a million bucks! "Any Way You Want It" is done up in true Little Girls style, packed full of gorgeous, soaring harmonies and oozing effervescent spirit. "I Really Want To Be With You" is the real gem: the kind of perfect pop song that could fill your darkest day with a blissful blast of California sunshine. The melody is magnificent, and the Masos' voices blend like cinnamon and sugar.

The fourth track on The Clear Album, "Crush On You", is a demo from 1982 produced by the Podolor-Cooper team. It proves that, even without the glossy guitars and tricked-out studio frills, the Maso girls really had the magic. And ya know, they still do! The Little Girls are back, and a new album will be out soon. For now, enjoy The Clear Album!
