ERNIE WILKINS featuring 5 TRUMPETS Top Brass (1977 Japanese promotional sample 6-track mono LP with custom black on white labels for review ahead of release, recorded for Savoy in November 1955 & engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. The 'five trumpets' in question are Donald Byrd, Ray Copeland, Joe Wilder, Ernie Royal & Idrees Sulieman - each of whom at one time has been given credit for this session but it was in fact led by conducter & arranger Ernie Wilkins, who also provided half thetunes for the album. Aided & abetted by the very worthy Savoy in-house musicians at the time, Hank Jones, Wendell Marshall & Kenny Clarke, this album is a tour de force. The picture sleeve shows minimal wear, complete with the obi-strip & Japanese insert, the vinyl is near mint WAJ-70131)
