A FEW OF THE ITEMS WE WANT...
| THE DICK MORRISSEY QUARTET Here And Now And Sounding Good!
(Rare 1967 UK 6-track mono LP on the textured black & silver Mercury
label, recorded 23rd & 25th September 1966 in London with Phil Bates
on Bass, Bill Eyden on Drums and Harry South on Piano, front
laminated back pasted picture sleeve with sleeve notes by Mike
Hawker 20093MCL) See 'More Info' for further details on
condition ...
Tracklisting: Dick Morrissey really should need no introduction. He sadly left so little recorded music behind him under his own name, thanks to a dislike of the sometimes clinical atmosphere of the recording studio, that he's not as well known as Tubby Hayes, for example, but he really should be. Easily amongst the best Sax players Britain has ever produced, he was most often found doing what he loved best, playing live to an appreciative audience. If you were lucky enough to hear him play, as I was, you will know just how good Dick was. One of British Jazz's best kept open secret treasures.
This was his fifth album, and the first since 1963 to not be recorded live.
Condition
For an item almost fifty years old, this is a very impressive copy. The sleeve has just a couple of minor marks to the edges with minimal laminate lift. The mainly white pasted back is still very clean.
The labels have just a few light spindle marks & are otherwise also very clean. Visually, there is a little faint axial wear to the grooves if you look really closely, but nothing of any real consequence or anything that interferes with playback. This plays through like a dream, as we've just listened to it all & it's wonderful.
There is none of the usual 'burring' evidence of heavy play or a less than friendly stylus being used in the past. All sonics are full and impressive, from the smallest bell taps on the ride cymbal, the solo Bass runs of Phil Bates to the full melodic and agressive power of Dick Morrissey's Tenor in full flow.
A wonderful example that should take pride of place in every jazz collection.
