Originally aired in November 1993, just five months before Kurt Cobain's death, MTV Unplugged in New York is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary live albums of all time. Filmed at Sony Music Studios in New York, the setlist defied expectations. Rather than simply reworking their biggest hits, Nirvana dug deep into their catalogue and delivered raw, haunting versions of tracks like Polly, Dumb, and Something in the Way. Cobain's aching vocals are laid bare, each lyric delivered with a startling fragility that makes the performance feel more like a confession than a concert. They also paid tribute to their influences with inspired covers of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World, Lead Belly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night, and three standout tracks by the Meat Puppets, with the Kirkwood brothers joining Nirvana on stage.
Dave Grohl traded sticks for wire brushes, showcasing a softer, more restrained side of his drumming, while Krist Novoselic provided grounding acoustic bass and even picked up the accordion for Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam. With former Germs guitarist Pat Smear rounding out the line-up, the band found a balance between delicacy and tension - a live performance as emotionally resonant as it is musically rich.
