PETER HOWELL & JOHN FERDINANDO Alice Through The Looking Glass (Monster rare psych/folk limited edition 1969 UK-only private press 12-track vinyl LP on the Sound News Productions imprint, housed in a unique, oversized, silk-laminated picture sleeve. This 1969 longplayer was the first release by the budding production duo who would go on to release four 'holy grail' private press LPs (and one acetate). In 1969 local amateur dramatic society the Ditchling Players were looking for some music to flesh out their production of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'; enter John Ferdinando and Peter Howell, two local budding sound recordists/musicians who not only had a room full of exotic instruments (flageolet, glockenspiel, auto-harp anyone?) but crucially had just purchased a shiny new Revox Tape Recorder! Punching well above their musical weight they crafted strange instrumental passages, utilising an array of oddball recording/production techniques in order to enhance the spoken word passages of the play - let's just say they went beyond the call of duty! Incredibly, Howell and Ferdinando would go on to mastermind five legendary privately pressed albums, all under assumed names: Agincourt, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Ithaca and Friends - jeez!! All of their recordings were pressed in tiny double-digit quantities [pressing any more than 99 copies made you liable for a tax bill] and were given out to cast members, friends and family. It's rumoured that 50 copies of 'Alice' were made, how many survived, even less. Please see 'more info' for further details... SNP11/12)
