Label Design: -
With 'Inc' & 'R' lettering after 'Blue Note'. Deep groove with '47 West 63rd - NYC' address.
This second variant was pressed just after "Blue Note Records" became an incorporated company & a registered trademark. The same fine sound as the 47W63rds pressings without the 'INC' and 'R' on the labels is present. We have play tested this record & the sound is immense, no doubt coming from an early batch of the second run with stampers originating from the same Matrix/ mothers as the original 47W63rds previously mentioned.
A combination of Van Gelder's sound engineering & Plastylite pressing [with or without the 'R'] is well & truly the 'golden age' for highest quality, Blue Note pressings.
Condition : -
Obtained from a one previous owner collection, the heavyweight pasted laminate sleeve is in beautiful shape. Clean, with rich, vivid colours & all text clearly legible, there is just the faintest bit of scuffing or chipping to the paper at the corner edges to show for its vintage. Otherwise this is a lovely example, which even retains a nice, period UK tax code sticker & also the Mecolico royalty sticker for author's rights, which were affixed during export from the US, both on the back panel, complete with period company catalogue inner.
The colours of the labels are bright and vivid with no tears to the print. There is a 'deep groove' visible both sides & a raised edge. From a collector's standpoint, a flat edge is more desirable but in terms of sound quality there is little between a flat & raised edge pressing of these original monos [we have found & play tested both in our time]. There are some very light spindle marks to indicate play but nothing excessive.
The vinyl has been professionally cleaned and has come up looking sparkling. Obviously being such a great album, there are signs of past enjoyment with the odd light paper scuff or hairline. Upon play testing both sides, we can confirm the quality of the pressing stands out above all else. Any surface noise is mostly kept to a minimum throughout. Wonderful stuff, firmly meeting a 'very good' condition grading & often playing higher, we have to say there really is no other way to own this - you've got to get a first pressing mono to hear the difference...
