album, originally released in 1960, highlighting Harriott's dazzlingly
innovative approach to jazz, which he developed in parallel with [and
entirely separate from] Ornette Coleman's works across the Atlantic;
Harriott and his group [Shake Keane, Pat Smythe, Coleridge Goode
and Phil Seaman] took a unique approach, dispensing with showboat
solos, and allowing pieces to progress naturally - an essential addition
to any jazz collection! Presented in sealed card slipcase)

REECE QUARTET At The Jazz Band Ball Acetate (One-off 1957
UK 12" double-sided metal based ultra high-grade methyl
cellulose lacquer acetate, containing a unique & unreleased
recording of the May 9th, 1957 BBC radio broadcast, At The
Jazz Band Ball, introduced by Dill Jones & produced by Jimmy
Grant. The acetate has a Sapphire manufacturing label both
sides with annotated artist & show details [At The Jazz Band
Ball was a BBC Special put together by the team behind the
'Jazz Club' show]. The disc is fleshed out with two previously
unreleased BBC session recordings by the Dizzy Reece Quartet
from the same broadcast. Considering it was common practice
at this point for the BBC to wipe & re-use tapes for other
programmes, this makes for quite a discovery! See 'more
info' for further details...)
Tracklisting: Obtained from the private archive of a jazz enthusiast of the era, these recordings have been lifted from a copy of a BBC reel tape. Some of the tape saturation & compression sound like brief drop-outs on occasion but the quality remains sound & the unique recordings held on this disc could easily be used for professional use. If the original BBC master tapes are deemed lost forever more then a second generation source is to be highly commended & more than likely the ONLY surviving example. This would not have been pressed a second time.
Each song listed below is captured in full.
The Tony Kinsey Quintet - Joe Harriott [as], Bob Efford [ts], Bill Le Sage [p & vib], Pete Blannin [b], Tony Kinsey [d]
Setlist: No Decision/ I'm Beginning To See The Light/ Pleyel/ Fishin' The Blues/ Hi-Ya/ Love For Sale
The Dizzy Reece Quartet
Setlist: Now/ Bang!
The surface of the acetate has some natural cosmetic wear & some light scuffs & there is a short test tone lock at the beginning. It would benefit from a professional clean [distilled water only] & is left 'as is'. Despite light surface, the mono playback is of great clarity.
We have ONE & one only, never to be repeated. Do not hesitate if this should belong in your collection. | | JOE HARRIOTT QUINTET Swings High (2004 UK digitally remastered
