Rachmaninov's five Etudes were orchestrated by the Italian composer Respighi, who was experienced in the Russian approach. Rachmaninov offered Respighi some cryptic hints about the inspiration behind each tableaux & these gave rise tothe popular titles of the individual pieces. Also on this disc are two of Tchaikovsky's final works. Both were published posthumously but they belong to widely separate periods in the composer's career. The Storm was originally composed in 1864 during Tchaikovsky's student days, whilst the Voyevode was composed in 1891 at the very end of his life.
