JACKIE MCLEAN Jacknife (Blue Note Tone Poet Series 2025 limited edition 5-track stereo LP cut directly from the original analogue tapes, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed at RTI on 180-gram vinyl. Recorded in 1965, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's Jacknife finds him in fiery post-bop form, joined by two trumpeters - Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver - who contribute contrasting voices and memorable compositions. The session also features a dynamic rhythm section of pianist Larry Willis, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. From the modal drive of Tolliver's "On The Nile" to the restless energy of DeJohnette's "Climax," the date captures McLean at his most exploratory. Morgan's "Soft Blue" provides a grooving contrast, while McLean's "Blue Fable" shifts from a loping theme into hard-swinging improvisations, highlighting the leader's sharp-edged tone and adventurous spirit. Presented inside a deluxe tip-on pasted picture sleeve, hype sticker & factory sealed inside its loose bag. Recommended)
