JOE ZAWINUL Zawinul (1971 US 5-track stereo LP, on the green & orange Atlantic label. This is a great album from the creative engine behind Weather Report & Miles Davis' electric years, guest starring everyone from Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock to Miroslav Vitous, pasted picture sleeve with Miles quote on the back. The sleeve [VG] does show a few light scuffs & peel to the laminate around the edges, with all text legible & the vinyl appears Near Mint SD1579)

Opening with Doctor Honoris Causa dedicated to Herbie Hancock for his Honorary Doctorate at Grinnell University, Zawinul doubles up with Herbie on the keys [with Woody Shaw on trumpet] to create an impressionistic sound painting, a work that, in its way, compliments Miles' In A Silent Way recorded a year before - Zawinul expands on that very number on side 1, and with tape-speed manipulation and Echoplex devices deployed to vast effect, across the whole of the LP, he produces a rich and adventurous affair worthy of the attention of any serious jazz-rock fan.
