CLIFFORD BROWN Memorial Album (1956 US first press 10-track Deep Groove Mono vinyl LP on the 'Lexington Ave' address Blue Note label, with no 'r' in 'Note' & the 'ear' & 'RVG' etchings in both run-outs. This is one of the holy grails of Blue Note collecting. Don't waste your time trying to find a mint one (they don't exist!), buy a cheaper alternative & marvel at the sound quality. This beats any CD version hands down & the disc has been professionally cleaned & play graded. Complete with the original pasted picture sleeve, this example is graded G/G- & comes from the private collection of a former staff member for Dobells record shop in Charing Cross, London. Condition:

At first glance, this record would appear to fall into our "Wrecked But Rare" category, but it plays like a beaut. The pasted picture sleeve has split halfway along the top & bottom horizontal edges & remains intact. There is some faint sticker residue along the top edge from past reinforcement & we have left the edges 'as found' for you to secure with tape as you wish. There is paper loss & scuffing along the spine, yet the panels look great & the artwork still packs a punch. The original tax import stickers are attached on the back [small number annotation on the rear in the corner], & although the spine is no longer readable, all album notes are clearly legible. This is a serviceable & surviving copy that grades G- & could even be framed.

The labels are unblemished with no tears or writing. The 'deep groove' is present both sides & there is no 'r' registered trademark at the end of 'Note'. The original 'Lexington Ave' address is shown both sides. All of this indicates to a first pressing, & what confirms it is the 'ear' marking in the run-outs, meaning pre-Liberty [these are most certainly NOT left-over stock labels from a later re-release]. The 'RVG' marking is also etched by hand both sides of the run-offs. There are spindle marks by the centre holes to indicate a large amount of play.

We have professionally cleaned the disc on a top of the line Matrix machine & the wax is nice & shiny & grades Good, with a flat edge before the run-ins. There is cosmetic wear & some scratches & marks on the disc, but playback reveals no major loss in fidelity. On a correct mono playback setting, which eliminates surface noise left & right, the sound quality is astonishing. There is a little faint surface at the start & very little inbetween tracks, & no distortion. The record is pressed to such a high quality that the music simply takes over & is loud & clear, with any faint clicking from the marks mentioned barely detectable. Even in this condition, this really does sound miles better than any CD version we have heard, & although it's a world away from being mint [which would fetch ££££!] this is a very pleasing G-/G example that plays higher & comes recommended.
