This is the third issue on the yellow and black Parlophone label. The first two issues were on the black and gold design, with the first yellow on black issues lacking the 'Recording First Published' text.
This is technically the fifth issue, still from 1963 and still with -1 matrix numbers.

The labels:

Black and Yellow Parlophone in design with 'The Parlophone Co Ltd' perimeter text.
As this is a 1963 pressing there is no 'Sold in the UK' text across the centre of the label & the 'Recording First Published 1963' credit is present. The 'Recording First Published' text is only present on this fifth press.
The labels have clearly readable silver text with no blemishes or fading & striking yellow Parlophone logo.

The very strange thing here is the unusual presence of no fewer than FOUR Tax Code letters, arranged at 12, 6, 9 & 3 O'Clock around the centre as PMKT. It is known that EMI added letters to their stampers to cope with changes to the Tax Code, but the first black & gold label 'Please Please Me's should have had the 'MT' code but are most often found with 'ZT' or 'WOZT'. Later issues should have the 'KT' Tax Code. The only other EMI Beatle presses known to have this 'PMKT' Tax Code were later copies of the 'Love Me Do' single. This makes this copy somewhat of an anomaly!

Matrix numbers:

The matrix numbers on both sides finish -1 indicating that this copy was among the first pressed:

Side One XEX 421-1N
Side Two XEX 422-1N

The vinyl is in excellent condition with just a few light surface scuffs & some spindle marks around the centre hole to show for over fifty years. This is highly unusual as many copies of this album were played excessively at parties during the sixties and many became damaged or badly scratched.

Complete with the period 'Use Emitex' poly lined inner.

The Ernest J Day front laminated picture sleeve has the large block 'mono' logo and is in VG condition, with light discoluration, mainly to the unlaminated back. The sleeve does, however retain crisp clean laminate & rich colours. Although the corners show soome edge scuffing, the edges are undamaged and the spine is still clearly readable. The rear of the sleeve has not had the benefit of being protected by laminate, however it remains nearly as white as the day it was purchased with little wear or discolouration evident.

The vinyl is far better than the sleeve in this case, which is sometimes how it goes. We can therefore offer this curio out at an advantageous price, perhaps to re-sleeve should a suitable sleeve surface.
