Imagine a twenty year old in your office telling you about a near 50-minute continuous piece of "rock" music he’d wrote and how he’d like you to release it on your new label. Such was Richard Branson presented with when he first met up with Mike Oldfield. Not that the young Oldfield didn’t have credentials. He’d been in a folk band with his elder sister Sally since he was fourteen and had spent the past few years in Kevin Ayers back up band, The Whole Wide World. The rest, as they say, is history. Tubular Bells was an overnight hit for Virgin Records, selling millions of copies. It rose to No. 1 in the UK and No. 3 in the US. That the album garnered such immediate success was telltale of the time. Oldfield was presented as a multi-instrumentalist-savant and the long of it only added to its appeal. The working title of "Opus 1" gave a little more light onto its content: Oldfield took accessible, near Celtic themes, and wove them together in a gentle and naïve fashion that approached minimalism, but remained populist. The first side opened with the hook of a lifetime; the piece ebbed sideways more than forward, gradually building until the resplendent finale during which Viv Stanshall introduced each instrument. The second side worked similarly; only the Moribund vocals and the Bootleg Chorus interrupted the circular motion of the acoustic instruments; it was a gentle extension of the first, except with a Bugs Bunny ending this time around. Oldfield played most everything, with Tom Newman providing the production. Early the following year, an excerpt used as the theme for the movie The Exorcist, would break the Top 10 in the US singles charts. And it wouldn’t end there! An orchestrated version, courtesy of composer David Bedford followed in 1975 and again charted in the UK, but a live version (with a host of Virgin label-mates) remains unreleased. Oldfield’s follow-up albums were similar in style; Hergest Ridge also managed to top the British charts upon release, while 1975’s Ommadawn would settle for No. 4. He enjoyed a long career, vaguely going mainstream after 1978’s double album Incantations.
