CHARLIE BARNET Vs WOODY HERMAN One Night Stand With The Battle Of The Bands (Amazing 1974 US 10-track LP that managed to get both bands together at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California on July 30th 1949 for a 'Battle', refereed by no other than Stan Kenton. Looking at the line ups now, people like Maynard Ferguson, Manny Albam, Shorty Rogers, Gene Amons, Jimmy Giuffre, Serge Chaloff, Terry Gibbs, Oscar Pettiford, Shelly Manne ... the list goes on. As luck [or design] would have it, this event was recorded for broadcast use at the time & by some small miracle, that broadcast tape has survived to be reproduced here. The Barnet Band take the first four numbers, with the Herman band taking the next five & both bands together for the finalé. The pasted picture sleeve remains in wonderful near 'as new' condition with the excellent vinyl also showing little sign of play, still in the original opened shrink! LP-1012)
