The Cry Of Love - Red Vinyl Test Pressing

JIMI HENDRIX The Cry Of Love (Rumoured to be one of only five in existence, this 1971 CRIMSON RED vinyl test pressing has become the stuff of legend. Pressed up to test the dealer reaction to vinyl colour ofthe Pink Fairies' 'Never Never Land' LP, they used the plates from the current production run - Cry Of Love - as the Fairies' album wasn't ready at that time. The first side of the disc has the correct Track label for the Jimi LP, but with theFairies beingon parent company Polydor, they switched the side two label for an available Polydor label for colour comparison - In this case 'The Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert'! Both sides are the as issued Cry Of Love, despite what the label says. Just to round things off nicely, the LP was packaged in the original Pink Fairies sleeve, complete with inner & printed PVC outer)

Whatever the real story of this pressing, the fact remains that it is startlingly Crimson, there are only a handful in existence & they only originally existed in a Pink Fairies first pressing Never Never Land sleeve with printed PVC outer & single sided Fairies inner.

Some of the known copies to surface have obviously been re-sleeved in an early Cry of Love sleeve by people who knew no better. This record was never originally housed inside a Cry Of Love sleeve and this example is no exception.

The disc itself is pretty nice. There are spindle marks, paper scuffs & the occasional faint scratch on close inspection, but nothing that would greatly affect play. Let's face it, you're not looking at this to replace your old worn out copy, are you?

As a piece of history & easily the rarest thing to make it out of a UK pressing plant for Jimi, this has no equal. The curious combination of circumstances that led to this peculiar crimson pressing, were bordering on the miraculous.
Divine intervention ? Who can say, but I'm sure Jimi would have approved.
To complete this package is a print out of the Record Collector magazine article from November 1993, which also details the story behind this disc in a feature on page 63.

We never thought that we'd see one of these in our lifetime, but we did. Here it is & now it can be yours as the crown jewel of your Jimi collection!
