History :-

Taken from the infamous 'Troy Tate' produced sessions for the aborted first album the EX Teardrop Explodes guitarist was enlisted by Rough Trade as the band's first producer following extremely well received BBC Radio 1 sessions for John Peel and David Jensen. .

These legendary and the majority being still officially unreleased sessions are the talking point of all Smiths collectors with a total of 14 tracks recorded which included the tracks from this single [Reel Around The Fountain & Jeane].

Following a recording in August for another session on the David Jensen Show, the track Reel Around The Fountain was banned for broadcast due to sexual references which consequently prompted Rough Trade to sack Troy Tate and cancel the single.

The album was subsequently decided to be of poor quality and John Porter was then drafted in to rescue the project but was unable to remix or salvage any tracks due to them being described as out of tune and out of time and so the album was completely re-recorded.

Debate still rages today as to the merits of the 'Troy Tate' sessions and doubt has been cast on the decision to cancel the original recordings. Copies leaked out to fans and a multitude of bootlegs were produced prompting fans and even certain members of the band to declare that they preferred the rawness of these sessions as opposed to the more lush and sanatised 'Porter' versions.

The debut single was then decided to be This Charming Man with the b-side Jeane and in an attempt to salvage something from the first session they decided to include a Troy Tate demo version.

This legendary unreleased version of the single existed only as a 25 copies Test
Pressing run with the catalogue number the same as the later This Charming Man 7" single [RT136].

The labels are plain green. The matrices in the run-offs are machine stamped & read: RT 136 A-1U-1 / RT 136 B-1U-1 with hand etched 'Slap Me On The Patio' lyric in the dead wax on the b-side.

Condition :-

The vinyl is clean & grades Excellent. There is a tiny 3" in length hairline part of the dead wax missing from the run-in groove. Note: this has NO effect on play & does not intrude on the placement of the needle before the track either. It is purely cosmetic &, of course, all part of how test pressings are produced, as they were never intended for sale to the general public. It took us ten years to re-stock this one. A genuine & vital piece of The Smiths history. One of the twenty-five. That's one VERY exclusive Smiths club indeed!
